Trillian
The first thing you'll need is the Jabber plugin to connect to the service. Download it, install it, and continue on.
Next, enable the Jabber plugin in Trillian. To do so, go to your
Preferences, select the Plugins option, and check the box next to the
purple orb that's labeled "Jabber." Now we can create a connection.

To create a connection to the Google IM service, click on the
"Identities & Connections" tab. Use the "Add a new connection"
button and select "JABBER."

Now here's where it gets tricky. Trillian wants you to input your
JID (username) and your password. The plugin says that your JID (Jabber
ID) should be in the form of user@server.com. Instead, use the form of user@gmail.com in this case, where user is your gmail account. Now click the "Create this account on server" button, as we don't want to connect just yet.

So now we have a Jabber account created, but we need to setup a few
last settings before we can connect. Click on your new Jabber account
(the one with the purple orb) and click the "Change" button.

In the Connection tab, we need to change the Server Host to talk.google.com and add our gmail username to the Authenticate As box as well. I'm not sure you need to change the Resource to GoogleIM, but I did it anyway. Leave the Server Port at 5222 and leave the checkbox unchecked.

Click the "Save Settings" button and connect to the service. You
should see a server status window telling you what's going on. If you
don't see it, click the purple orb in your Trillian buddy list and
click "Show Status Window" to get it open. If all goes well, you should
see a series of server status messages which will eventually say You have successfully connected to Jabber. Sometimes the connection fails and you'll see Connection lost to server. even though it says you Authenticated. I'm not really sure why it happens, but reconnect and it should connect. Eventually.
